Vienna – Week 27 data dump

Officially, my Fulbright Austria grant at the Diplomatische Akadamie Wien ended last Tuesday. Tomorrow, I’m off to Birmingham (England, not Alabama) for what promises to be an exciting workshop on race and racism in the current conjuncture. And so this is a good moment to update the data dump I shared roughly three months ago. (And, yes, it’s also been a week with few, if any, dump-worthy new photos. So the fresh data dump is also a cheap way to cover for that.)

  • 80 – New (to me) beers tried
  • 62 – Postcards written
  • 62 – Postcards sent
  • 13 – MA committees served on
  • 12 – Friends who do not live in Vienna whom I have seen here anyway
  • 8 – Strudels eaten
  • 6 – Schnitzels eaten
  • 5 – Sacher tortes eaten
  • 5 – Times people have mistaken me for something other than US-ian [English(x2), Canadian, Irish, and “White European”]
  • 3 – Times when my German was strong enough for me to catch a non-trivial mistake made by native speakers
  • 3 – Times when I was an unwilling captive audience for Billy Joel’s “Vienna”
  • 3 – Beer bars where servers recognized me as a repeat customer by mid-January
  • 3 – Beer bar friends (fellow customers) made
  • 2 – Postcards received
  • 2 – Public transit fare checks passed
  • 2 – Accordion players encountered on public transit
  • 2 – Children “playing” harmonica while walking down the street*
  • 2 – MA seminars taught
  • 1US governor met
  • 1 – Friend who does not live in Vienna who was here and I missed out on seeing
  • 0 – Days when I felt sad about missing most of a Minnesota winter

*Bonus freakishness: These happened within 24 hours of each other, within one block of each other, but were 2 different children.
