Smaller than usual photo dump this week, but I anticipate next week will be much bigger. The “Philly” cheesesteak pictured here was always going to be a mistake. One simply does not expect anything called a “cheesesteak” made outside of the Delaware Valley to taste like the real thing. But I was surprised enough to see an entire eatery dedicated to this staple of Philly street food that I felt obligated to try it. And, to my surprise, the result was closer to my recollection of the real thing than I expected it to be. Not enough for me to hurry back. But I didn’t regret the experiment.
Harder to forgive, though, was the wall art. People! You’ve named your restaurant “Philly.” You’ve opted to lean heavily into a basketball motif for your decor. Your obvious choices for old school Philadelphia basketball icons would be the young Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Darryl Dawkins, and Allen Iverson. And instead you pick … Kobe Bryant? Michael Jordan? SMDH…
